"Iron Strata" mixed media abstract © Carol Nelson Fine Art

I was pounding things flat with a hammer and my new anvil today.  This painting was sitting near the table I was working on.

It's a painting I did about a year ago.  I've brought it to several workshops as an example of using paper to look like rusted iron (using iron paint.)

This curled piece of flattened copper wire looks great as a little embellishment on this painting.

This is a demo painting from my recent workshop at The Gallery at Midtown in Dallas, Texas.  Thanks to Teta Smith for taking care of my every need and making me feel like a Diva.

Thanks also to Dana Brown at Ampersand for donating 11x14 Gessobord panels for the class.  They make beautiful surfaces for this textured pour technique.

"Overview 2"

This image looks too vibrant to me from the one I have on my computer.  Sometimes they change when I upload them.  The one on my website is better.

This painting is similar in method to the one I posted yesterday.  The Gessobord panel on which it is painted, was heavily textured before the paint (Golden Fluid and/or Golden High Flow) was poured on it.

This is my latest "combination", as Robert Rauschenberg called his 3D work.  It is a collection of found objects and miscellaneous junk.  I painted each object with Iron Paint (Modern Masters) and then applied the activator to create rust.

It makes anything - paper, plastic, wood, metal - look like rusted metal.  I love the look.

These are really fun to make, but more complicated than I originally thought.  Each one is a little construction project.  It's not that easy to get everything arranged in a visually pleasing, yet physically stable, configuration.

This is the beautiful flyer put out by Dillman's Creative Arts Foundation.  It's about my workshop in Wisconsin April 17-22, 2014.

I'm not a computer whiz, so I can't get this to be larger or easier to read, BUT, there is complete READABLE info on my website and Dillman's website.

This will be a small group with LOTS of individual attention from me.

You're probably saying to yourself, What the heck is THAT?!  It's my latest wall sculpture.  It has rusted stuff, burlap, and some other things mounted on a 4x4 inch wood panel.

I got the idea from reading about Nkisi - an ancient art form from a tribe in the Congo.  They used a lot of nails in their figures which
were thought to contain spirits.

There's an artist in the U.K. by the name of Wayne Chisnall that has based some of his work on the Nkisi too.  His boxes are amazing.

As you can see, the nails are carefully rusted before use.  The circular part at the bottom of my sculpture is made from glue from a glue gun.  When it gets hard, you can paint it with iron paint and rust it as if it were metal.  So cool.

Here's another of my muted palette mixed media pieces.  Lol - just kidding about the "muted" part.  This was a demo I did last week for some students taking semi-private instruction in my studio.

It started out as a monoprint, but in the following day or two, I kept adding stuff (acrylic drizzle skins, marbleized/stamped paper) to this painting.

That's a joy/curse of mixed media - you never know when you're DONE!
Who knows? - I may add MORE stuff to this one (but probably not).

I love tall skinny canvases and panels - maybe because it's what I am not.  These measure 6 inches wide by 48 inches tall.  For some reason, composition is a breeze with this size.

I started out with some gold metal leaf in a random pattern on my black gessoed panels.  The stripes are Golden fine pumice gel that I used a sculpting tool to make stripes.

I messed around with some corrugated paper - some painted blue green, but decided to try fiber paste.  I also antiqued the gold leaf using raw umber and wiping most of it off.

Then I added Blended Fibers by Liquitex.  It dries transparent, but when you paint on it, it has texture and absorbs the paint differently than the black gessoed surface.

The rest of the panels was painted with Golden Fluid Acrylics in black, white, raw umber, and Paynes gray. I was going for a muted palette where the metal leaf is the star.  I'm in the process of adding epoxy resin to the metal leaf areas only.  I think the play of shiny and matte surfaces will be good.

This is another in my mini wall sculpture series of "combines".
This one combines ordinary metal hardware parts that have been painted with alcohol inks.

If you love color, working with alcohol inks is both fascinating and amazing.  It is mesmerizing to watch them interact with each other.

This is another in my  series of tree collages.  What doesn't show in this photo image is the sparkle of the pearl mica flake - it just looks dirty yellow in the photo.

What can I say?  I could go on endlessly making variations of these colorful tree collages.  This was another demo for private students in my studio.  As a teacher, this tree technique is very satisfying because all my students have great success with it.

"Billboard 1"

This started out with me trying to remove some collaged papers from a wood panel using a razor blade and sand paper.  The paper that remained stuck on the panel suddenly presented itself as an artsy possibility.  You always have to be on the lookout when you're deconstructing a collage for new unplanned accidents.

I decided to work with what I had. I did a little stamping, and a little painting, and voila!

"Wood Rock" 36x24 mixed media

This painting was based on a piece of petrified wood I found in a gem and mineral store in Taos.

The wood/stone was polished on one side, but the other side, which was rough, was the one I chose to paint.

I added more "stones" in the center crevice.  Those "stones" are actually pieces of shells and broken auto glass.

It was a lot of fun to paint a geologic abstract with the model, with it's amazing subtle color variations, sitting right in front of me.

I really wish the shiny metal parts of this painting showed better in the photo.  It adds so much when you can see all the shiny/dull and rough/smooth parts of this mixed media piece.

Yes, I know "ABC FGH" is not the most inspired title, but when my husband suggested it, I couldn't get it out of my head.

There's gold leaf, aluminum foil, mirror paper, origami foil, and glass beads in this on.  It seems my love for shiny stuff is without limits!  In person, this looks so much better than the photo.

This is a demo piece from my recent workshop in Wisconsin in which we applied heavy texture to our Gessobords, let it dry for a couple days, and then poured acrylic paints on the surface.

Patience is the key here.  You have to sit back and watch while the colors mingle and create new colors and forms.  Slightly tilting the board with the wet paint helps it flow around the texture, but mostly you have leave it alone and let the paint do it's thing.
