Visual Language visits Carol Nelson's studio

Here I am in the uncontrolled chaos of my studio.  See the article in the latest issue of Visual Language about a visit to my studio.

The article is on pages 92 - 100.  There is also an ad for my upcoming Denver area workshop on page 136.  The first session filled up so quickly, we added a second session on Feb 8-9, at Kimberly Conrad's Boardinghouse Studio.

I look wistfully at the beautiful studios some artists have.  But they are not mixed media artists!  When you're into mixed media, you have to save every piece of crap you come across.  OK, that's a little harsh.  But it IS crap, until you turn it into a masterpiece (perhaps)!

Take this painting, for example, that I recently completed:

"Southern Relic"

There's a piece of old rusted metal in there that I found in the gutter in New Orleans recently when I was there for Golden Art Educator training.

Check out more 2014 workshops at my website.

Art Unraveled - 2014, in Phoenix, AZ

I'm teaching this summer at Art Unraveled in Phoenix, AZ.  This will be an exciting event for me because I've never taught classes at the Art Unraveled event, and it's my first time teaching in Arizona.  Yes, I know Arizona in the middle of summer is very toasty, but we'll be in an air conditioned hotel.

I'm teaching three classes.  Click here to go to the Art Unraveled website, then click on "Artists", then scroll down to my name.

If my classes interest you (they're all fab), I suggest you reserve your spot early, because when they're full, they're full.

"Rumors" 16x12

In this abstract on canvas, I was exploring letters, colors, and gestural marks in an nonrepresentational painting.

For some reason, the color in the lower photo is much more accurate.  There must be some new problem with Blogger about color reproduction, because the image I uploaded is not so saturated.

"Fractured Letters"

This was a fun project.  I read about this on Pinterest.  Print out your name (I used CAROL) on your ink jet printer in a font you like.  I used Ariel Black in 200 font size.  Spray with fixative so the ink will not run.

Cut the letters up and mount them on a panel or canvas.  I used a 6x6 wood panel.  Use polymer medium gloss to attach and seal.

I wanted to try using Golden Clear Tar Gel as a surface treatment instead of varnish or resin.  To hold in a thick layer of gel, I used blue painters tape around the edge.

Some happy accidents occurred (I love happy accidents.)  My cheap ink (from Overstock.com) bled, in spite of being "fixed" with ink fixative spray (Premier Art.) That's what the blue bleed around the letters is from.  I like it.

The black gesso on the sides was brushed on after the piece was done.  Originally, I had white sides, but changed my mind, thinking black would look better.  ANY stray gesso that got on the tar gel surface was about impossible to remove, but I like that too.

I'm not sure if it's the tar gel layer, or the bleeding that gives the piece somewhat of an encaustic look.  Another like.

I can imagine doing this on a huge scale.  Even if you do a little one, you could use it as a design for a larger work on canvas. I could never come up with a design like that - it has a geometric and random look at the same time.

WOW! I just realized this is blog post #1001!  That's a lot of blabbing about art - hope you enjoy my rambling.

"Layers 2"

When I was in New Orleans last October for the Golden Art Educators training, there were a number of artists in the group who were very good at this type of collage technique.

It looks so easy, but it is NOT.  The layering of different collage elements, bringing some forward, pushing some back, does not come easily to me.  I need lots more practice.

I'm just starting to experiment with gestural marks.  In this case, I started with some scribbles from an oil stick.  Later in the process, I used color shapers to inscribe the circles in the upper left quadrant.  This is a timing issue.  The bottom layer must be dry when you apply another layer.  When the top layer is still wet, you can draw into it and the bottom layer will show through.

The painting is on wc paper, and mounted on wood panel.  There are a number of artists who work this way.  The nice thing about painting on paper, followed by mounting, is that you don't mount
anything that is not successful to you the artist.

"Mineral Rights"

This geologic abstract painting is done with high flow acrylics on a textured canvas.  In pouring on the colors, you don't have total control over what's happening and that is what's fun about painting this way.

"Layers 3" 8x8 inch mixed media collage

This is the new version of a painting I did last month.  The only difference is the addition of the black circular squiggles.  I admit to being terrified of gestural marks such as these - ESPECIALLY if the painting beneath is already done.

It would be easy to really screw up a half way decent painting by adding these quick marks that cannot be easily controlled.  Their beauty is in their spontaneous flow of movement.

So these were done as an acrylic skin on a sheet of plastic.  The black lines are dimensional paint (Tulip and Lumiere are two brands).
After the dimensional lines are dry, cover them with soft gel gloss, clear self leveling gel, or clear tar gel - all Golden products, although other manufacturers make similar products.

You end up with the black lines (in this case) in a sheet of clear acrylic that you can cut up, and arrange on your painting any way you choose.

Here's a view of some other squiggles I have ready to go.

The beige background is the wood of the table.

Golden's Glass Bead Gel

I have a new love: Golden's Glass Bead Gel.  Suspended in soft gel gloss are tiny spherical glass beads.  I'd say each one is about the size of the period in this sentence - maybe a little larger.

When view from certain angles, they all refract the light.  It's really cool looking, and difficult to capture on film.

More to follow...............

"Ancient Mysteries" 36x40 inches

First painting of 2014!  It's a departure from my normal saturated earthy palette.  It even has pink in it - a color I usually hate, but it seems to work here.

This painting was torturous for me.  There must be 8 or more layers of paint as I struggled to find the right color combination.  Close inspection reveals some of the previous color choices.

The unusual texture is achieved with Golden's Glass Bead Gel.  The little beads are about the size of a period on this page.  That isn't very big, but when you spread them out on the surface with a palette knife, they refract the light in an unusual manner.  It's also interesting the way you can charge in another color after they're dry, and watch the color working it's way into the beads.

This painting is another in my letters/numbers series of layered collage paintings.  Like a dummy, I forgot to photograph it before I applied a layer of epoxy resin, so there is glare and reflections in the dark areas.

"Winter Wardrobe 2"

This painting is a demo I did for my Abstracted Tree class yesterday.  I used Golden's Pearl Mica Flake (small) for the "snow".
I really like the effect, and wish you could see it better in the photo.  It goes on as a white gel, but after it dries, all you see is the little reflective mica flakes.

This painting is a large (48x36 inch) triptych on three wood panels, each measuring 48x12 inches.  I added a LOT of texture, including gritty modeling compound, rocks, and glass blobs.

The most exciting thing about this painting is hardly even visible in a photo.  The area around the rocks has a pouring of epoxy resin resembling water.

This painting is a demo I did for private instruction students in my studio.  I was trying for a more muted version of my tree paintings.  This one has pearl mica flake "snow", which does not photograph well, but is a really beautiful effect.

"Red Muse"

This was a demo piece I did for a mixed media workshop I was teaching last weekend.  The letters are words I found in the Sunday paper advertising section.

I like seeing the title of a painting IN the painting.  Also, you will notice some corrugated cardboard, burlap, stenciled letters, and gestural marks.

"USO Tour"

This is a demo painting I did for my mixed media workshop over the weekend.  I called it "USO Tour" because it reminded me of the trips made by celebrities to entertain the troops.  The painting has fresh faces, bling, and music all incorporated into the design.

I am pleased with the color palette which has some subtle gray-greens in the background, and the occasional surprise color choices of blue and purple.

Hello Subscribers and Art Lovers,

Some artists have a beautiful, neat studio to
work in.  Mine is always in a state of chaos.
Part of the reason for that is because I work in
mixed media, where every scrap of paper, or fabric,
or miscellaneous junk COULD end up in a painting,
so I have to hold on to it.

I just got back from a workshop in Texas at the
Wenmohs Ranch.  Dena Wenmohs runs a fabulous
art program on her ranch, and is fabulous in her
own right, so it's always fun to go there.

My next workshop is in Dallas, at the Midtown
Gallery.  It's nice to go someplace
warmer during our winter months.

=====================================================

New work:

This painting, "Ancient Mysteries" is a 36x40 painting I
just completed.  It was a struggle, because it's a little
outside my normal earthy palette.  Pink and mauve are not
my favorite hues, but somehow they showed up in this
work.  There's a lot of paint layers underneath the
surface as I struggled to find the right mix.
The good news is that this painting was named Outstanding
Abstract in the Bold Brush Painting Competition.  Woot!

=========================================================

This is another new one called "Arroyo".  It's a
triptych on 3 wood panels, each measuring 48x12
inches.  The cool thing about this painting is the
use of real stones in a bed of clear epoxy resin.
An arroyo is a dry streambed that sometimes fills
with water, and I wanted to painting something
resembling that.

====================================================

Just sold:

"Breakwater"

My dentist bought this one in return for services.
How often do you leave the dentist with a new crown
AND a check?!?

"Southern Relic"

This painting features a piece of rusted metal that
I found in a gutter in the French Quarter in New
Orleans.  I told the buyer in Texas that it had
probably been peed and puked on during Mardi Gras,
but she wanted the painting anyway.

    "Blue Grove 2"

This is another in my tree series, and has a lot of
texture in the foliage.  It went to a collector in
Denver.

___________________________________________________

I've already got 4 workshops scheduled for 2015 in
Texas, California, Nebraska, and Texas again. I will
get them posted soon.

My workshops in Phoenix next summer at the Art
Unraveled extravaganza are filling fast, so don't
delay if you were thinking of that venue.

Thanks again for all the wonderful comments and emails.
It means a lot to me to hear your meaningful thoughts.

March is coming up, so that means spring is around the
corner (unless you live in my home town, Duluth, MN,
where they've had the most severe winter in decades.)

Warm regards,
Carol

Anvil

My new anvil arrived in the mail.  It works much better than the home-made anvil I was using, and it's not as noisy when you pound on it.  It flattens wire in a couple of strokes.

If you like to add little metal embellishments into your mixed media work, you might want one of these.

I got mine at Bead USA,Inc.
