"Color Study 4”, textured mixed media abstract by Colorado contemporary mixed media artist Carol Nelson

"Color Study 4" 10x8 acrylic by Carol Nelson
This is another in my color study series done on Fabriano 90 lb water color paper.  In this one, I was obviously using color complements - opposite on the color wheel.

The circular patterns are from a couple pieces of patterned rice paper I collaged on to the painting (couldn't help myself.)

Color Study 5, 10x8 acrylic by Carol Nelson

The 5th in my Color Study series, this one has a little modeling compound applied to the paper before I started painting.  I was after a more muted palette than my usual boisterous color party.

I had not intended on doing a landscape, but it formed on the paper in front of me, so what else could I do.  The addition of the bush forms really confirmed that it was a landscape.

I like high horizon landscapes because you can do so much abstraction with the majority of the painting.  If you cover up the upper quarter of this painting, it becomes a total geologic abstract.

"Vienna Inspiration" 40x10 mixed media by Carol Nelson

If ever I could say the photo doesn't do the painting justice, it is this one. The painting is on an oak cabinet door that measures 40 x 10 inches.  I used gold metal leaf as the initial layer on the panel, then added a number of mixed media materials including guilded paper, tyvek, ribbon with metal-look studs, and black glass gems.

The textured elements are recessed in the cabinet door and covered with a layer of resin.  This is a piece that cannot be separated from the frame, which is finished with hammered copper paint.

So, why, you may ask, is it called "Vienna Inspiration"?  We just returned from a cruise on the Danube where Vienna was one of the ports of call. The Belvedere Palace in Vienna is the home of several famous paintings by Austrian painter Gustov Klimt.

I actually stood in front of "The Kiss".  I would have loved to take a photo, but they were not allowed.

"The Kiss" - Gustov Kilmt, 1908

Then, I came upon a shocking revelation.  Another of his paintings, "The Serpent," looked very familiar.  I realized that the patterns in the painting are the very same as those in a rug in my family room!!!  GASP!

Klimt-inspired rug
When I bought the 6x8 rug a few years ago, I had no idea it was inspired by a Klimp painting.  I just loved the colors and patterns.

I just had to try to do a Klimt-inspired painting.  I especially like works from his "guilded period" where he made liberal use of gold leaf.  "Vienna Inspiration" is the result.

Hello Subscribers and Art Lovers,

I hope this newsletter finds you well, and not plunged
OVERNIGHT from a lovely fall to the dead of winter, as
we were here in Colorado.

I've conducted several workshops around the country
since my last newsletter, including Louisville, CO;
Dallas, TX; and Raleigh, NC.  They were all very fun,
and I heard those words I love to hear from more than
one student:
"This is the best workshop I've ever taken."

In between destination workshops, I've hosted several
groups of students for semi-private instruction in my
studio - several of whom were from Canada.  I told
them I'm practically a Canadian myself, growing up
in Duluth, MN, only 150 miles from the border.

I'm now able to take a break from my busy teaching
schedule and concentrate on my own work. I recently
discovered air dry clay, and some uses for it that I
could apply to my work.

These hand made clay pieces may be painted, or
covered with torched origami foil for a very
unique and beautiful look.

At my workshop last week in Raleigh, at the
Hilton Midtown, there were 30 students torching
foil, which creates some smoke.
I was worried the fire marshal would
shut us down, or, even worse, the smoke alarm
would go off.  Didn't happen (whew).

Here's an example of a medallion used in a small
mixed media painting.

"Kimono", 6x6 mixed media abstract by Carol Nelson

This is a painting I did as a demo in my recent workshop in Raleigh, NC.  As with many of my demos, I did not have time to complete it in class, so I finished it at home.

This painting has some printed paper, Asian newspaper, origami foil, and some fluid acrylic squiggles that were done on a sheet of plastic.  After the squiggles dry overnight, they can be handled and placed where needed in a painting.

My apologies to anyone who can read Korean script.  I have no idea what this little newspaper snippet says - it could be an ad for something embarrassing - or, maybe not.  I just like the look of the characters.

"Poinsettias" 18x30 oil painting by Carol Nelson

I did this painting of poinsettias a few years ago when I was still doing realism.  Being poinsettias, it's a seasonal painting that I display every year in December.

"Medallion" 27x9 mixed media painting by Carol Nelson

This painting was started in my studio as a demo for students studying with me.  It has many of the materials and techniques we were studying, including rusted paper, torched origami foil, a hand made clay medallion, and a partial epoxy resin finish.

The painting "floats" in the black wood frame, and can be presented in either a vertical or horizontal format.

"Twilight Dance" acrylic abstracted tree landscape © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Twilight Dance" 36x24

This is a tree landscape in which I experimented with pouring and dripping on the canvas to simulate distant tree branches.  These drips were partially covered up when I painted in the foreground trees.  I like the abstracted effect of the loose, drippy background.

As with all my tree paintings, I paid attention to the value contrasts of light-on-dark and dark-on-light.

I painted this while we were spending a week at our condo in Breckenridge.  The couple that went with us loved it, and bought it on the spot.  Would that all sales came that easily.

Another in my Gemstone series.  The center square is covered with epoxy resin.  I dropped some shell fragments into the wet resin before it dried.  Can you see where I used rice for texture?

"Mineral Rights 2", 24x24 by Carol Nelson

detail

This painting represents another in my geologic abstract series.  It shows my interpretation of petroleum deposits deep within the earth.

The black/gray areas have a smooth, glass-like coating of resin, which contrasts beautifully with the other heavy rough-textured areas.

For additional pizazz, I added a few mica flakes and micaceous iron oxide paint.  You know how I love sparkle.

This mini wall sculpture is ablaze with color and shine.  The painted metal parts are secured to a cradled wood panel with glass-like epoxy resin.  When you see this in person, you want to run your hands over the smooth glowing surface.  Photography cannot capture the beauty of this unique one-of-a-kind piece.

This painting was created as a demo for a recent workshop.  I was showing the class how to incorporate materials such as burlap and paper strips made from failed paintings into a new work.  I love the unexpected colors in this tree painting.

A layer of crystal clear epoxy resin covers and protects this painting, making it suitable for display in any environment, including  a kitchen or bath.  It arrives ready to frame or display on a small easel.
